Discover the story of the Eritrean Community in Winnipeg
Our Community
Building bridges between Eritrean heritage and Canadian life since 1983
Eritrea is located in the Horn of Africa, along the Red Sea coast, bordered by Sudan, Ethiopia, and Djibouti. The country, approximately the size of Nova Scotia, has a population of about 5.2 million.
More than 3,000 Eritreans currently reside in Winnipeg. The first Eritrean refugees arrived in 1982, joining a small group of Eritrean students who had come from Saudi Arabia (1975–1981). Recognizing the need for a strong community voice and support, they founded the Eritrean Community in Winnipeg Inc. (ECW) in 1983. The organization was incorporated in 1985.
ECW is a non-political, non-profit, community-based organization run by a volunteer board and many volunteers. Its mission is to strengthen Eritrean networks in Winnipeg and build new ones that help immigrants adapt and integrate into Canadian life.

Eritreans in Winnipeg are known for resilience, family and community solidarity, respect for elders, cultural pride, hospitality, and hard work. A tradition of mutual aid—welcoming newcomers, pooling resources, and volunteering—continues to define the community.
ECW is recognized as a Private Sponsorship of Refuges (PSR), helping reunite families and sponsor refugees displaced by conflict.
After 40+ years, ECW remains a cornerstone of Eritrean life in Manitoba—preserving culture, empowering youth, and contributing to Canada's diversity and resilience.
